How to activate the camera in google Meet
Your employer has given you the access code to a video conference call they set up on meet. And here comes the bitter surprise: in fact, you have noticed that your computer’s webcam is not automatically detected, and all your attempts to activate it have not given the desired result.
Don’t panic! If so, take five minutes of free time and let me help you explain how to activate the camera in Meet both on computers and on smartphones and tablets. In addition to the detailed procedure for allowing the Google service to use your camera, you will also find instructions for activating/deactivating shooting if necessary during meetings. I assure you it is very simple.

How to activate the camera on Meet from PC
The procedure for activate the camera in Meet from pc it’s quick and easy. The first thing to do is to allow the web browser used to access the service to use the webcam and microphone. Subsequently, during a meeting, it will be possible to activate and deactivate the camera as many times as desired by pressing the appropriate button.
To proceed, connect to the official Meet website and, if you haven’t already done so, log in with your Google account: then click on the item Log inselect thegoogle account of your interest (or click on the item Please use another account if the account you intend to use is not listed on the screen Choose an account), enter it password in the appropriate field and click on the button After you.
At this point, for activate the webcam in Meetclick on the icon gear wheel (top right) and if this is your first time using Meet, you should see the message Allow Meet to use your camera and microphone. If so, click the button Allow appeared on the screen, in order to allow the browser in use to use the webcam and the microphone of the computer on Meet.
Once this is done, on the screen Settingsselect the tab Video and, if more than one webcam is connected to your computer, choose the one you intend to use by selecting it from the drop-down menu Video camera. Then press the button xto save the changes and return to the main Google Meet screen.
If, on the other hand, you have denied Meet permission to access your webcam and/or microphone in the past, you need to go to your browser settings and remove the block from there. For example, if you use Google Chrome you must press the ⋮ button located at the top right and select the item Settings from the menu that opens. In the new tab that appears, go to Privacy and securitythen up Site settings and remove Meet from the sites blocked for access to Camera and/or Microphone.
After you allow your browser to use your computer’s webcam, you’re ready to create a new meeting or join a video conference hosted by someone else.
In the first case, click on the button New meeting and select the option Start a new meeting now, to start a video conference with Meet. In doing so, the camera should already be active by default: if not, you can activate it by pressing the icon video camera placed below.
If, on the other hand, you have been provided with the link or invitation code for a meeting organized by another user, enter it in the field Enter a code or link and press on the item Participate. In the screen Ready to participate?click on the icon video camerato activate/deactivate your webcam.
Furthermore, by clicking on the icon of three dots and selecting the option Change background, you can customize the background of the video captured by your webcam. In this regard, my guide on how to put the background on Meet could be useful for you.
Instead, click on the item Audio and video verificationbottom left, and pressing the button After you, you can record a short video to verify that the microphone and webcam used in Meet are working properly. Once the necessary checks have been completed, press the button Participateto join the video conference.
During a meeting in Meet, you can turn the webcam on and off as often as you like by clicking on the icon video camera or using the key combination Ctrl+D (on Mac it is cmd+d). Pressing, however, on the icon of microphoneyou can both activate the microphone on Meet and deactivate it when you deem it appropriate.
How do you say? View the Meet camera black? In that case, if the icon of the video camera that allows you to activate and deactivate the webcam, it means that you have started a meeting in Present modewhich allows you to share your computer screen but does not allow you to use the camera or microphone.
If you need to present with Meet and, at the same time, have the possibility to switch to the “classic” view by activating your webcam, you can start a “normal” meeting and, subsequently, activate the Present function by pressing on the option Submit nowlocated at the bottom right. How to activate the camera on Meet from a mobile phone
You want to know how to activate the camera on Meet from a mobile phone? All you have to do, in this case, is download the official app of the service for Android or iPhone/iPad devices and, on first access, follow the instructions shown on the screen to allow the app in question to use the camera and the microphone of your smartphone (or tablet).
To proceed, therefore, launch the app Google Meetpress the button Continues and tap on the item Allow/Okay twice consecutively, to give the app permission to access the microphone and camera.
How do you say? Have you denied Meet using your smartphone’s camera and would you like to change this setting now? In that case, if you have a device android, launch the Google Meet app and, if you haven’t already, sign in with your Google account. Then click on the options New meeting And Start a meeting now and, in the screen Meet requires your permissiontap the entry Provide access.
On iPhones/iPadsinstead, press the icon of gear wheel visible on the home screen of the device, to access the Settings of iOS / iPadOS, then tap on the item meet and, in the new screen that appears, move the lever relating to the option Camera from OFF to ON.
At this point, press the buttons New meeting And Start a meeting now, to organize and start a new meeting. If, on the other hand, you want to access a conference for which you have been provided with the access code, tap on the options Join with a code And Participateto request to be added to the meeting in question.
In both cases, your camera should be active by default and you can deactivate and reactivate it as many times as you wish, simply by pressing on the icon of the video camera. Also, if your device has a dual camera, you can quickly switch between cameras by tapping the camera icon two arrowstop right.
In case of problems
If you followed the instructions I gave you in the previous lines of this guide, you should have managed to activate the camera on Meet.
If this is not the case and you are having problems with your webcam, I advise you to check its correct functioning (e.g. by trying it on other services similar to Meet, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams) and, if you are using an external webcam, check its connection . How do you say? Is your webcam working fine but you’re still having problems with Meet? In that case, connected to the Google support site, press on the option troubleshooting and click on the item Troubleshoot Google Meet. Alternatively, write “Meet camera not working” in the field Describe your problem placed at the top and press the key Enter of the keyboard, to display the search results.
