To add a Gmail account on iPhone or iPad you can follow two different procedures, depending on the app you want to use: Google’s Gmail or Apple’s Mail . To use the latter, you need to add your Gmail account in your iOS/iPadOS settings.

To do this, start the Settings app that you find on the home screen or in the app library and select the items Contacts> Account> Add account> Google . Then enter the access data of your Gmail account and choose which services to synchronize with your device (in this case at least Mail to manage e-mail). By doing so, through the Mail app you will be able to manage all the Gmail accounts configured on your iPhone or iPad.

If you want to use the Gmail app instead, after installing and starting it on your Apple device, press the Login button and set up your first Google account by typing in your login details. To add multiple accounts on the Gmail app , however, tap on the thumbnail on the right of its main screen and press on the item Add another account .

Want to add Gmail account to Outlook or any other email client? No problem! I’m here to help you! To configure Gmail in a traditional email client, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird , you must first activate the use of the IMAP or POP3 protocol on your email account.

In case you didn’t know, the IMAP protocol allows for two-way synchronization of mail, this means that all messages are downloaded to your computer, smartphone or any other device and also remain on the Gmail servers. In addition, any changes made online or in the local mail client are automatically reflected on the other side as well.

The POP3 protocol , on the other hand, is not suitable for use on multiple devices and does not support two-way data synchronization (usually messages downloaded locally are deleted on the remote server): I advise against using it, except in cases exceptional and I suggest instead to take advantage of the IMAP protocol; clearly, the last word is up to you, based on your actual needs and preferences.

To activate the IMAP or POP3 protocol on Gmail, connect to your Gmail mailbox via browser (the one you prefer), typing email.google.com in the address bar and then pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. At this point, click on the button with the gear icon , at the top right, and select the item View all Settings from the menu that appears.

On the page that appears, select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab , activate the option Enable IMAP (to enable the use of the IMAP protocol) or Enable POP for all messages (to enable the use of the POP3 protocol) and click the Save Changes button located at the bottom of the screen.

In the case of the POP3 protocol, also put the check mark next to the item Enable POP only for messages arriving from now on and choose the Archive copy in Gmail option from the drop-down menu When messages are downloaded via POP , so that they are not deleted from the Gmail servers. Afterwards, click the Save Changes button to apply the changes.

At this point, start your favorite email client, start the wizard for adding a new email account and fill in the form that is proposed to you by entering the following information.

If you don’t know how to start the procedure for adding a new e-mail account with the client you intend to use, follow the instructions below.

  • Microsoft Outlook – go to the File menu , press Add account and select Advanced options . Then put the check mark next to the item Allow manual account configuration , click on the items Connect > Google and configure the Gmail parameters manually. You can also attempt the automatic account configuration procedure by filling out the form that is proposed to you immediately after selecting the option to add a new account with data relating to your Gmail address.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird — click on the Menu button , on the right, go to the New menu > Existing email account , fill out the form that is proposed to you and click on the Configure manually button to enter the Gmail configuration parameters.
